#12DaysOfGiving Day 2: Dennis Crowley & Camp Interactive

Meet Dennis Crowley, our featured social good superstar for Day 2 of the #12DaysOfGiving challenge. His Twitter profile (@dens) says simply: "I like snowboards, foursquare and unemployment." We think he's being modest, though. Not only is he the co-founder of Foursquare, but he was also on Family Feud. (Yeah, there's lots of other impressive stuff that you can read on his site, but we thought Family Feud was the coolest.) His charity is Camp Interactive. CampInteractive (CI) is a not-for-profit organization that empowers inner-city youth through the inspiration of the outdoors, and the creative power of technology. They believe that when urban teenagers step back into nature and forward into technology they gain invaluable skills, heighten their academic standing, and begin to realize more of life's possibilities. Social Media Adventure meets Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo

What an awesome day... I'm always ranting about the amazing power that social media has to bring people together for a good cause (the Bad Hair fundraising project for autism this past week has been a great example of that), but my favorite stories to tell are the ones where cool stuff seems to happen totally at random. (Take Social Media Serendipity part 1, 2 or 3 for ...

Name Your Challenge – Use & Abuse Joseph for the Autism Fundraiser

I get it. You've been watching me encourage you to donate funds in this awesome fundraiser for 5 days now. You're probably wondering if it's ever going to stop. You might be getting bored of me asking, again and again, to donate to these wonderful kids, diagnosed with autism, that need your support. (All of our support) I realize that, and I want to keep things exciting and amazing ...

The Ugliness Takes A Turn Toward Beautiful…

WOW That's really the only thing that can be said at this point. What started out as a fun little idea to raise a few dollars for charity, while simultaneously making fun of my poor grooming habits and subsequent lack of dates, has now evolved into a super fun little soap opera. First, Carl Seier made fun ...

Bad Hair Day turns even uglier…
Social Media Fundraiser for National Autism Association

If you've been following along, a few days ago I launched a Crowdrise campaign to raise $500 for the National Autism Association. After 7 months of not cutting my hair, I decided to put that ugliness to good use. Refusing to cut my hair, I posted some really ugly "Bad Hair" photos until our goal was reached... it only took 3 days. (Yes, it was that ugly) Now ...

Joseph’s Bad Hair Fundraising Project for the National Autism Association

Okay, here's the deal, I'll make it quick: here's a really great chance to show the power of Social Media and help some very special kids in the process. I'M NORMALLY A VAIN GUY... ...but I have gone over 7 months without a haircut. WOW! I figure I deserve a prize, or money or some kind of a medal for this magnificent feat, especially considering how vain I am. BUT, i'm ...

Crowdsourcing Breakups – What to do with an unused engagement ring?

Social media is a powerful tool for creating new relationships. Every day we make connections through friends, and friends of friends, as we go about our social media journey. The purpose of the Social Media Adventure was to demonstrate this potential with live case-studies by journeying across the country to meet in-person those friendships that were previously only online. Social Media has helped me create these relationships with ...

The Day I met Mark Horvath

This is a special blog post by Tahl East, Campus Director of CDI College in Winnipeg. From a very young age I wanted to change the world. Maybe it was the fact that I spent many a night in bomb shelters in Northern Israel, maybe it was the time spent in South Africa as a tween during apartheid or maybe it is ...

Dinner with a Homeless Dude
Meeting Mark Horvath, found of Invisible People.

As it always does, it began with a tweet.... 20 minutes later I was having dinner with a homeless dude. Actually, you can safely blame @GregHartle for this fiasco. Him and @tahlari, to be precise. After seeing @tahlari send a tweet announcing a presentation by Mark Horvath, champion of the cause to bring light to the homeless: Have you or someone you ...

Social Media Stole My Kidney

The focus on the Social Media Adventure is to demonstrate the power of Social Media to bring people together to form authentic in-person relationships. While the majority of the posts on here are experiences from my own travels, this one was WAY too cool to pass up. Amy Donohue (@TheFabulousOne ) is an "unfiltered & vocal woman" (Her words, I wanted to use "loud mouth") and often speaks ...

Random Tweet + Tesla Roadster = New Connections

It started with a random tweet. It ended with a ride around Winnipeg in a Tesla Roadster and a new friendship. I saw @KeithBilous tweet about how much he loved giving people rides in his recent "birthday gift to himself": A new Tesla Roadster. I responded and said I wanted a ride, too. :) Seeing that my Twitter profile says I'm in Phoenix, he joked ...
