Social Media Adventure meets Jim Cuddy of Blue Rodeo

What an awesome day... I'm always ranting about the amazing power that social media has to bring people together for a good cause (the Bad Hair fundraising project for autism this past week has been a great example of that), but my favorite stories to tell are the ones where cool stuff seems to happen totally at random. (Take Social Media Serendipity part 1, 2 or 3 for example) Today was one of those days. Here's the chain of events: I met some great people at a tweetup in Winnipeg earlier this summer They introduced me to @PayChen through Twitter when I suggested that I might be looking for an apartment in Winnipeg Pay introduced me to @SeanGrech, a producer at CityTV in Winnipeg, who wants to do a story about our Bad Hair for Autism fundraiser I head down to the station this morning to meet the crew who is doing the story and.... Lo and behold, who is there? None other than a childhood hero of ...

Bad Hair Day turns even uglier…
Social Media Fundraiser for National Autism Association

If you've been following along, a few days ago I launched a Crowdrise campaign to raise $500 for the National Autism Association. After 7 months of not cutting my hair, I decided to put that ugliness to good use. Refusing to cut my hair, I posted some really ugly "Bad Hair" photos until our goal was reached... it only took 3 days. (Yes, it was that ugly) Now ...

The Day I met Mark Horvath

This is a special blog post by Tahl East, Campus Director of CDI College in Winnipeg. From a very young age I wanted to change the world. Maybe it was the fact that I spent many a night in bomb shelters in Northern Israel, maybe it was the time spent in South Africa as a tween during apartheid or maybe it is ...

Dinner with a Homeless Dude
Meeting Mark Horvath, found of Invisible People.

As it always does, it began with a tweet.... 20 minutes later I was having dinner with a homeless dude. Actually, you can safely blame @GregHartle for this fiasco. Him and @tahlari, to be precise. After seeing @tahlari send a tweet announcing a presentation by Mark Horvath, champion of the cause to bring light to the homeless: Have you or someone you ...

Random Tweet + Tesla Roadster = New Connections

It started with a random tweet. It ended with a ride around Winnipeg in a Tesla Roadster and a new friendship. I saw @KeithBilous tweet about how much he loved giving people rides in his recent "birthday gift to himself": A new Tesla Roadster. I responded and said I wanted a ride, too. :) Seeing that my Twitter profile says I'm in Phoenix, he joked ...

Tweetup in Winnipeg, Manitoba – #SMMBT

"I'm having a beer at Earl's. Come down before the Tweet-Up." says the text message from JF Ratthé, the expert of Downtown Winnipeg Condo's. I don't like beer, but I do like JF, so I go. ;) JF is what Social Media is all about. He is a connector, through and through. He is funny, engaging and - above all - he ...

Road Trips, Tweeting Cell Phone Numbers & Making Friends

On my recent trip to Thompson, Manitoba, I had plenty of time to think. (Thompson is about 8 hours north of Winnipeg... brrr!) So, after I ran through all my thoughts, I had another 7 1/2 hours of drive time ahead of me. As I'm known to do, I tweeted my cell phone number and asked for some moral support in the form of inspiring or funny text messages ...

Flying To Phoenix from the Grand Forks International Airport – North Dakota

Like many Winnipeggers (people who live in Winnipeg) I was fascinated when I heard that you could fly from Grand Forks, North Dakota to Phoenix, Arizona for $19. Yes, $19. As in, less than twenty bucks. On a good day, a flight to Phoenix from Winnipeg will cost in the $300-$350 mark. Not an overly expensive flight considering Southwest doesn't fly out of any Canadian cities. :( [caption id="" ...
